Becoming a Behavioural Detective: The Early Years

There is always a reason for the behaviour! This one-day, in-person introductory workshop will assist early childhood educators, support workers and Early Years therapists in supporting children with issues that can result in “challenging behaviour”. Participants will be invited to forevermore become behavioural detectives, using clinical reasoning, to look deeper than the surface actions we observe in the kids around us. Topics such as developmental disabilities, attachment strategies, developmental trauma and sensory processing will be discussed in such a way as to assist anyone in an early childcare setting to become more curious in their mindset and more informed in their practice.
In addition to learning to assess and support little ones (and their families), this workshop invites professionals to expand their focus away from “managing behaviour” to a lens of self-understanding. Why am I activated by this child’s behaviour? How do I regulate my own nervous system in the presence of behaviours I experience as difficult in the kids I support?
Through a blend of lecture, storytelling, video analysis and small & large group discussions this work will be led by Kim Barthel, OTR and supported in facilitation by the Relationship Matters Team.
What will we learn?
• Developmental disabilities and the neurobiology of dysregulation
• To differentiate between sensory, emotional and cognitive components of behaviour
• The impact of developmental trauma on regulation and social engagement
• Supporting challenging behaviour through sensory and relationally-informed interventions
• Self-awareness, self-regulation and self-care in our work
When: 9:00 am - 4:00 pm (MST), Saturday, October 22nd, 2022
Where: Prestige Rocky Mountain Resort - 209 Van Horne Street S, Cranbrook, BC
