Vestibular-Visual Matters
This 16-hour intensive dive into the development and integration of the vestibular and visual systems offers clinicians the opportunity to understand the impact that their interconnectedness has upon function and intervention. Neuroscience guides clinical reasoning and problem-solving, offering validation with evidence for our treatment selections. Occupational Therapists and Physical Therapists will have the opportunity to bridge theory to practice through lecture, videotape analysis, small group discussions and lab experience through live, online and interactive trainings. Although the goal of this course is primarily to support pediatric rehabilitation, the concepts will be applicable across the lifespan. This is an intermediate-level learning experience, and neurodiversity within a wide range of diagnostic categories will be explored.
Edited recordings of each of the 8 X two-hour sessions, led by Kim and supported by her Relationship Matters Team, will become available to each participant for until July 31st, 2022 via live-streaming with multiple viewings being possible. Handouts and an extensive reference list will be made available before the training, and chat histories with content summaries will be provided after each session.
The participant will be able to:
1. Analyze the impact of the vestibular system upon posture and movement
2. Summarize the neuroscientific contributions of the vestibular system upon regulation, emotion, cognition and learning
3. Determine the impact of the visual system upon posture and movement
4. Describe the current science of visual contributions to regulation, emotion, behaviour and learning
5. Assess skills of vestibular functioning through videotape analysis, labs, breakout room participation
6. Develop vestibular-visual strategies that support clients with a range of vestibular-visual challenges, in diverse settings
