Conversation with Ruthie Smith, energy psychotherapist
by Bob Spensley & Kim Barthel
Kim recently sat down with Ruthie Smith, an author, musician and energy psychotherapist with a long-held interest in the ‘shift’ of humanity’s awakening consciousness, and in the integration of energy and spirituality within psychotherapy. Ruthie is an attachment-based psychoanalytic psychotherapist (The Bowlby Centre, London) and energy psychotherapist with thirty-five years’ clinical experience in private practice, and ten years as a principal psychotherapist and supervisor in the National Health Service (UK). She has taught extensively on psychotherapy trainings, is invited to speak at various conference and events.
Kim and Ruthie discussed their shared work of evolving consciousness, energy and the sensory systems and you can watch the video interview here:

After studying subtle energy and vibrational healing for many years, Ruthie founded The Flame Centre in London in 2009, and she specialises in training people in trauma work using subtle energy. Her book Energy, Soul-Connecting and Awakening Consciousness: Psychotherapy in a New Paradigm (Karnac/Phoenix London 2024) brings vibrational medicine to counsellors, psychotherapists and the general public. Energy psychotherapy combines talking therapy with embodied work, where clients use self-empowering self- applied energy methods to release the dense energy of trauma, thereby raising their energetic frequency and bringing more light into what she terms the bodymindenergy. Simply put, the more we raise our frequency, the happier we are. Ruthie is currently Director of a post qualification Clinical Training in Energy Psychotherapy run by Energy Psychotherapy Training, Ltd. She also contributes various chapters and articles to books and journals, most recently in The Attachment Journal. (Smith, R. (2024). “Transforming the compulsive patterns of attachment trauma using energy psychotherapy”. Attachment, 18, 205-222. doi: 10.33212/att.v18n2.2024.205)
As a musician, Ruthie sings in classical ensembles, particularly the Thomas Tallis Society in London, and has spent many years touring abroad at international jazz festivals (saxophones and voice), recording various jazz albums and playing in London Jazz clubs. Previously a chant leader and Trustee of an international Buddhist organisation where she taught introductory courses in Buddhism, Ruthie has also recorded an album of mantras for healing and blessing.
You are welcome to download some mantras for free from the Flame website www.theflamecentre.co.uk in the section about her book.
