Course Overview:
Trauma is a universal experience yet generally speaking, it is an uncommon part of people’s daily conversation. Thankfully, and appropriately, trauma-informed practice is becoming an increasingly common topic within forward-thinking organizations world-wide. This is essential if we want the people we serve to be receiving the most effective levels of support needed for them to thrive.
An individual’s experience of their life’s trauma impacts every area of human functioning: physical, mental, behavioural, social and spiritual. Circumstances such as domestic violence, abuse, neglect and addiction are examples of what is happening within families that dramatically affects a child’s development, and it significantly impedes their capacity to function in adulthood. But the understanding of “trauma” is frequently misinterpreted, misunderstood and minimized - leaving people responding repeatedly from wounded places, without awareness.
We are most effective supporting others when we understand how personal trauma experiences influence overall function and healing processes. Working in the fields of education, and allied health (occupational therapy, social work, psychology, counselling, child protection), this mental health workshop will help us develop new skills in working mindfully and effectively with our clients. For any of us participating in this workshop, the upside is that we’ll become a more effective clinician to the people we care for, and the spin-off is that we’re highly likely to understand ourselves more too.
Have you ever wondered where to begin to support your clients with mental health issues, developmental trauma, anxiety, and neurodiversity? Through clinical reasoning this workshop supports professionals in identifying which spoke on the bicycle wheel to choose as a point of entry into the treatment process.
Based on neurobiological foundations, with a holistic understanding of how the brain organizes arousal, trauma, executive functions and movement, this workshop combines a range of approaches to support clients. We will explore psycho-therapeutic relational interventions, attachment theory, sensory processing and body-based practices that enhance regulation and daily functioning. A combination of clinical reasoning, demonstrations and group problem solving, this two-day workshop will provide a deeper dive into the treatment process from a psycho-sensory perspective.
Learning Objectives of the ‘Trauma-Informed Practice’ Course:
The learner will develop an understanding of treatment options within a holistic model to support co-regulation and self-regulation
The learner will develop clinical reasoning skills to problem solve and develop treatment sessions within the psycho-sensory model
The learner will develop practical skills in the analysis of developmental trauma and attachment challenges through evaluation of non-verbal communication, the postural system and body language
The learner will develop psycho-therapeutic relational skills within the sensory-motor context
The learner will develop sensory strategies for the treatment of stress responses and dysregulation
The learner will evaluate and treat motor patterns commonly associated with trauma experiences
