Course Description:
This 3 day course is designed to acquaint Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Speech and Language Pathologists and Special Education teachers working with children with special needs with an introduction to the NDT Approach. The information presented will address current NDT principles (Day 1 & 2) including beginning assessment/evaluation and problem-solving handling techniques in children with developmental delay (Day3) and Autistic Spectrum Disorder (Day3). Participants will be assisted in improving their knowledge and observational skills while problem solving using NDT techniques to improve function for their pediatric clients.
Both didactic lecture and cases illustration will be presented throughout this course. In addition to didactic information, discussions will address current trends in the field of pediatrics.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to achieve a preliminary understanding of:
The required prerequisite sensory motor components and pattern of development in the first 12 months
Typical posture and movement pattern demonstrated by the children with abnormal tone
NDT concepts, principles of assessment and treatment
Neurobiology of movement disorders in DD and ASD
Typical motor development and the motor control issues in DD and ASD
Introductory skills in hands-on facilitation of the movement patterns in the children with DD and ASD
