Early childhood developmental trauma such as neglect, loss, abuse, or poverty can be examples of potential triggers for unfolding addictive coping strategies. Attachment patterns are self-protective relationship communication styles that evolve throughout our lifespan to help us stay safe and free of anxiety as we engage with the world around us.  When a child does not feel safe, soothed or engaged in the environment, the developing brain becomes architecturally altered in structure than does a brain growing up in safety, security and exploration.

This two-day workshop will weave together an understanding of how developmental trauma and attachment patterns unfold and the science of what happens to the brain when caregiving is either safe or maladaptive.

At the completion of this seminar, participants will:

  • Understand the signs & impacts of developmental trauma and the foundations of trauma-informed practice

  • Know more about attachment theory & how self-protective strategies arise

  • Understand the neuroscience of what happens in the brain when caregiving is insufficient in providing safety and its link to addiction

  • Develop an overview of the science of compassion and how relational intervention can change the brain and behaviour
